Finn lifted him out of his cocoon and rocked him gently back and forth while Xavier watched in rapt fascination.
“Well, be still my heart. I never thought I’d see the day.” He said, hand held over his heart. “Let me have him.” It wasn’t a question, Xavier made grabby hands after Atlas and we all laughed, except Finn who was currently looking like he wanted to throttle him.
Once Xavier had him settled, he cooed and ahhed while Finn tracked his every move. “Don’t think this little monster will get you out of hosting game night.” Xavier pursed his lips, “If anything it gives us more of a reason to be there.”
Finn groaned but smiled at me.
Bellamy sat on the edge of the mattress, “Finn’s family is in the waiting room.”
He ran a hand over his face, his beard was unkempt, and his hair was pulled back in a messy knot. “I’ll go talk to them.”
“Can I meet them?” I asked, sitting up and away from the pillows. I loved Finn and I wanted his family to know just how much he’d grown and become the best man I could have asked for in a partner.
“Only after cake!” Xavier warned.
We laughed and Atlas took the opportunity to have explosive diarrhea. Xavier promptly gave him to Finn with a sour look on his slightly green tinged face. Bell and I lost it, giggles erupted as we watched Finn grimace.
“Hi buddy.” Finn began as he changed our baby’s nasty diaper, “I’ll make you a deal, you never poop again on daddy’s watch and I’ll pad your inheritance with more money than you could ever need.”
“Foul play.” I mocked in anger.
“All’s fair in love and war, baby.” Finn leaned down, brushing my lips with his as he placed Atlas in my arms and left to speak to his parents.
Meeting Finn’s family was incredible. He looked just like his mother, and sister. If I didn’t already know they weren’t, I’d think they were twins. They marveled over Atlas, and asked so many things about me that I couldn’t remember everything we talked about.
It was the perfect way to meet them, even non showered and gross. Finn walked them out after an hour. Promising that they could come over whenever they wanted as long as they let us know ahead of time.
He hovered with Atlas in his arms as the nurse helped me into the shower. It was a tad awkward, but I needed to be clean and as fresh as possible. After tonight if we both checked out healthy, Dr. Ass was officially releasing us.
Regina came by with a little care package for mom and baby. Positively smitten with Finn and Atlas, much different from their last meeting. She patted Atlas and returned him to Finn, opting to leave us to grab all of our stuff before Dr. Ashton arrived.
She gave us the all clear and the hospital discharged us shortly after. Soon enough we were in Finn’s truck headed back to our house.
Ourhome.
It was my turn to host game night, and now that we’d moved into the new house I couldn’t wait to share this space with my closest friends. Finn already left to go next door, and Bell texted that she was on the way.
Finn went to the grocery store earlier and got everything I asked for. Fruit and a rotisserie chicken, because this mama was too tired to be making one herself. Besides, Xavier probably cooked some amazing sides to go with it, so I wasn’t worried.
I’d pumped earlier so that I could enjoy our adult time without having to sacrifice breastfeeding. I was being dramatic, but I wanted to feel like my old self, with Atlas in tow.
He was growing by the day, eyes alert and taking everything in. He was so handsome, with his big blue eyes like mama and dark hair like daddy. His chunky tummy and rollie pollie legs, I could just eat him up with kisses.
Bellamy had been over so much, and the extra pair of hands had been so helpful. I’d showered and napped. Finn had been in and out, working at the gym and helping Aaron with his security gig.
We’d taken a step back from wedding planning, just for a few weeks while we searched for a new client. Our two teams had things well in order, besides, Bell and I never took time off.
It was a needed break.
Xavier and Penelope arrived soon after Bell and I finished putting out all of the fancy serving bowls Finn’s mother insisted we would need. As with most things, I was beginning to notice Jolene was right.
She had proven to be an invaluable piece of wisdom and helpfulness that Finn and I needed the first few weeks of Atlas's life. It hadn’t felt like the first time we met was at the hospital when she agreed to stay with us for a few weeks while we got settled into a new routine.
She felt like what I imagined my mother would be in those moments. With her nurturing hands and soothing demeanor, Jolene felt like a security, much like her son. I still had trouble wrapping my brain around the fact that I could have such feelings about the mother of the love of my life. Without feeling the fear and insecurity of losing them.
“Where is my baby boy?” Xavier cooed, pulling me from my thoughts. He made his way over to Bellamy, who was burping Atlas. He dumped the things in his arms on the bar unceremoniously.
“You hold him, you change him.” I lifted my shoulders, “New players, new game rules.”
