Apparently she hadn’t seen Demo get shot. I hoped that he was going to be okay.
I wrapped my arms tightly around Eagle and rested my weight against him. It was going to be a cold ride to the clubhouse dressed as I was. I watched silently as Mac slipped off his cut and offered it to Jillian where she sat behind him. He mumbled something to her, and she put it on. Before long the others were following his actions, and all of us girls were slipping cuts over our exposed bodies.
“Thank you,” I murmured in Eagle’s ear, and then, because I couldn’t help myself, I gave it a tug.
He groaned and turned his head. “Give me your mouth.”
Smiling, I leaned closer and gave him what he wanted. His kiss warmed me on the inside, and I eagerly opened my mouth to his thrusting tongue. For a moment only the two of us existed.
“Time for that later, Brother,” Wolfe said as he started his bike.
Everyone else did the same, and then we took off. Eagle’s cut helped keep me warm. I buried my face against his shoulder and neck, inhaling leather and man. I closed my eyes as we rode through the night, thankful that we’d been rescued. I wondered if he was taking me to the clubhouse with the others and hoped that Eagle had something there that I could wear.
Without warning, another group of bikers approached us from the opposite direction. My stomach clenched with dread as I looked over Eagle’s shoulder and counted at least six, possibly more, lights, but it was too dark to make out which MC they were from. As if Wolfe had issued an order we closed in on one another, and he was flanked on all sides by his brothers. I supposed that because he was the president, his men would protect him.
Eagle turned his head. “If I have to lay my bike down, you use it for cover!” he shouted over the noise. “You hear me?”
I nodded. “Yes!” God, I hoped it didn’t come to that. Mac moved in beside us, and I looked over at Jillian. She looked terrified, just as I was sure I looked to her.
The other bikers had reached us and had slowed slightly. Everyone made eye contact as we passed each other. I held my breath, waiting, feeling how solid Eagle grew against me and understanding that he was getting ready for something to happen. And then it did. One of the unknown bikers raised his leg and gave the bike closest to him a hard kick.
It was Brew’s. His bike wobbled as he tried to gain control, but he clipped the tail end of Lynx’s bike, causing him to lose control. They both struggled to keep from going down or hitting anyone else. Someone screamed. That was all it took for both sides to pull over, and then holy hell broke loose. The stillness of the night was suddenly shattered by sounds of grunts, growls, and loud roars. Without warning, men from both groups charged at each other, engaging in a fierce fight.
I did as Eagle had instructed and fell to the ground and hid behind his bike the second that he dropped it. I had time to see that the other girls had done the same thing before I was able to take in the chaos in front of us. On the deserted street, two motorcycle clubs clashed in a heated battle as if their lives depended on it. It was hard to tell our men from the others. They were locked in combat, hitting, punching, kicking, and the night air was filled with grunts of pain and the sounds of fists hitting bodies. Tears filled my eyes when I realized that our side was outnumbered.
“Can you see who they are?”
I started at the closeness of Lola’s voice. She had crawled over to me without me noticing her. I shook my head, my gaze riveted at the scene playing out, wishing there was something I could do to help. “No, it’s too dark. I can’t make out what it says on their cuts.” I didn’t know why we were keeping our voices down when the brutal fighting drowned out everything else.
Suddenly, two men who were punching the hell out of each other moved closer to us, and before we could get out of the way one of them stumbled backwards over Eagle’s bike and went down. He ended up between me and Lola, and I recognized him as being one of the men who’d kidnapped us. I let out a sharp gasp and we made eye contact briefly before Mac grabbed him by the front of his cut and pulled him to his feet, only to punch him several times in the jaw.
“It’s them, Lola! The men who kidnapped us!”
Only now there were a lot more than four of them. I looked back at the fight. Several men were down and not moving. Were they ours? A shriek split the air, and I swung my head to see that one of the Maniacs had broken away from the fight and had gone after Ella. I didn’t even stop to think about what I was doing when I jumped to my feet and ran down to her.
I jumped on his back and started pounding on him, satisfied when I heard his grunts, but having no illusions that I was going to seriously hurt him. I’d just caught him by surprise. He released Ella and started to reach for me. I knew that if he managed to get his hands on me, he would hurt me, but the other girls had joined in and the five of us pounded and kicked on him until he went down to his knees. It was so satisfying to hear his groans of pain as we aimed our wrath at his face and upper body. Eventually he fell back onto the road, unconscious, but we didn’t let up, and continued to beat and kick him, taking out our own brand of revenge.
“Baby, baby!”
I dimly registered Eagle’s voice, caught up in making the man hurt for what he’d put us through.
“Leona!” That got my attention. An arm encircled my waist, and I was pulled back. “We gotta go, darlin’.”
As Eagle dragged me to his bike, I took in the bodies lying in the road and on the shoulder. Fear raced through me. “Are any of them ours?” I asked as he righted his bike and climbed on.
“No.”
“Are those men dead?”
“Not yet. Get on.”
Not yet? What did he mean by that? I climbed on behind him and we took off before the others did, but they caught up to us quickly. The main objective seemed to be to get to the clubhouse as soon as possible. Knuckles was waiting at the entrance, and he closed and locked the gate behind us. Once we stopped right outside the clubhouse I felt relieved. We sat for a minute beneath the windows where the light from inside came through. I could feel most of the tension leaving Eagle’s body. Then, just as I thought we were going to get off his bike, he reached for me and pulled me in front of him.
“We’ll give those bastards time to get to the chicken house and then head out.” Wolfe got off his bike, assisting Ella. “Do what you need to do. We head out in thirty minutes.”
Eagle turned my way when Wolfe was done talking.
“Are you okay?” His eyes held mine as his hands cupped the sides of my face.
