My mom jumped in. “Boys, don’t bicker. Please.”

He gave her an apologetic glance. “Sorry.”

My mom cleared her throat. “Wyatt has been filling me in a little on what you two have been up to.”

A flush of pink crept up Blade’s neck to his face. “Oh, really?” He sent me a look of death.

“She knew before I even opened my mouth.”

She gave an uneasy laugh. “Well, not really. I knew you two had some sort of energy buzzing between you.” She swallowed. “I didn’t realize exactly how it would manifest.”

He winced. “God. This is embarrassing.”

“Which part? That you were with a man or that the man in question is my son?”

He shot me a surly look. “Being attracted to a guy was definitely a surprise. But the worst part is that it was Wyatt. He’s can be such an—” He stopped abruptly, and then he continued more calmly. “He’s not my kind of person.”

“Yeah, we can’t stand each other,” I volunteered.

She watched Blade closely. “You’re both going to have to get over that.”

He shrugged. “Hey, just a week and a half more and we can go back to ignoring each other like usual.”

“Exactly. I for one can’t wait.”

She crossed her hands on the table. “You boys aren’t listening to me. I said you need to put your differences aside now.”

I chuffed. “Sure thing, Mom. Do you have a magic wand handy by any chance?”

She smacked her hand on the table and the salt and pepper containers rattled against the wooden surface. “This is serious. You have no idea what you’ve both gotten yourselves into.”

Blade looked nervous as he stared at her in silence.

She slid her bright gaze to him. “I need you to be completely honest with me, Blade. Now is not the time to lie or try and hide things.” She lowered her voice. “Were you ill?”

He gave a confused laugh, and he glanced at me as if he wasn’t sure how to answer. “What?”

“After you and my son had sex.” Red spears of color appeared in her cheeks, but she kept pushing forward. “Did you get sick to your stomach almost immediately?”

The color seemed to drain from his face. “How could you possibly know that?”

She gave a slow blink, and her shoulders slumped. “This would be so much easier if you two didn’t dislike each other so much.”

“What would be easier? How did you know I was sick?” His voice was soft.

She looked to me. “You two must find a way to come together.”

I scowled. “No. We just need to get through this assignment, and then we can never talk to each other again.”

“Mrs. Smith, how the hell did you know I was sick?” Blade looked puzzled.

She didn’t answer him. Instead she stood, and she seemed uncertain of what to do next. She pressed her palms to her cheeks, and her eyes glittered. “I don’t know the proper protocol. Should I tell the Ancients what has happened?”

“Tell them what?” I asked. She was acting agitated, looking around the room as if she thought someone was lurking in the corners.

Blade stood and his chair scraped over the kitchen floor. “No disrespect to you, Mrs. Smith, but we really need to get going. I prefer to have Wyatt in a more secure location.”

Her laugh was shrill. “You have no idea what’s happening, do you?”
