“Jer, calm down!” I whispered fiercely. “It’s me!”

“Aunty Nel?” He asked when I lowered my hand. “You can’t be here. It’s not safe. Grandmother is…”

“Trying to get rid of us?” I asked, helping him to his feet and checking out the bruises on his face and arms.

“You knew?”

“I just found out.” I replied. “Don’t worry about grandmother right now. I’ll deal with her later. Let me look at you.”

It angered me to see him like that. But I would save my anger for later. When I tried moving him, Kid made an appearance at the door and Jeremy quickly shifted his body in front of me.

“It’s okay, Jer.” I patted his shoulder. “It’s only Kid.”

“Are you two ready?” Kid asked after a quick mock salute to Jeremy. “Let’s go.”

Jeremy was wavey on his feet, but I helped him along with a strong palm to his lower back and one on his shoulder.

We were barely two step the stairs when someone shot at us.

The bullet ricocheted off the rail and Jeremy scream while I pulled him into my chest and shifted so my back was to the shooter.

Kid returned fire, the roar of the gun he’d taken off the first unconscious man was loud enough to deafen me.

Jeremy yelped.

“He okay?” Kid wanted to know.

“I’m fine!” Jeremy replied before I could. “Let’s just get out of here.”

“Are you sure?” I wanted to know from Jeremy.

“Nel! Focus!” Kid shouted.

I snapped to and turned to face the music.

The gun battle happened all the way up the stairs and along the hall.

Kid replaced one gun from a dead man for another. He slipped his body ahead of mine to get me and Jeremy out the door and into Demon’s arms.

A loud bang caught my attention and I shifted to see Sean ramming the front gates with the grate on the front of Demon’s truck.

I scrambled backward, using my body to protect Jeremy and eased him back toward the incoming truck. Sean swerved wide and the monster truck screamed to a stop.

“Get in.” I told Jeremy.

“What about you?” Jeremy asked.

“I have to go back for Kid, now go.” I told him, slamming the door.

Sean reversed the truck over the fallen gate. The tires squealing caught my attention as Demon, Mamba and I charged back into the house. Kid was already heading back down the corridor fighting with another one of Emmitt’s goons.

Irritated, I picked up a vase that had somehow survived the carnage, lifted it above my head and brought it crashing down into the back of the man’s head.

He slumped to the floor. Kid winked at me and we motored it to the office where the door was now locked.

I juggled the handle. “Open up you coward!” I screeched, shaking the handle harder.

Demon lifted me out of the way and both he and Kid slammed a foot into the door by the handle. When it didn’t budge, Kid stepped back and tried again. This time, the door splintered inward, and we had to jerk out of the way as Emmitt shot at us.
