Jake’s voice traveled down the hallway. “C’mon you two, I have Tex on the line.”

Murph mumbled under his breath about Jake being able to ruin a wet dream, and Sky giggled.

“I heard that.”

Sky’s eyes opened wide as she looked at him and she shook his head. There was no way he could have heard him only her giggle.

Gathering around Murph’s coffee table, they ironed out a plan. It was easier than he expected and technically they were sticking to the rules that Special Agent Dick laid out for them. It wouldn’t be their fault if Walker blew a gasket when he saw Sky and hot-tailed his happy ass down there to reclaim her. But if he did, they’d be waiting.

Chapter 15

The plan was simple. Jen contacted the local TV station to tell them she’d like to make a statement so everyone would know she was safe. They jumped all over it. Tex said since Walker had originally filed the missing person report in New York, they’d at least report about Jen coming forward if they didn’t show the whole press conference.

She’d spent the night in Murph’s bed with him like they had at the cabin. Her in the PJs and him in just sweatpants. Waking up snuggled next to him, warm, cozy, and safe started her day with a smile. Then she realized that the press conference was in a few hours.

The butterflies in Jen’s stomach threatened to send her running to the bathroom for the second time in the last hour. When they guys explained what she’d have to do, she didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. Except she hadn’t realized word would get out and a bunch of reporters would camp out in front of the Ready Room waiting for her and Murph to come out. Thank God for him. If she had to face them alone she’d already be in hiding.

“Ready, Sky?” Murph came through the back door and into her mom’s office where she’d been pacing for the last fifteen minutes.

“Do I have a choice?”

“Sweetheart, you always have a choice. But if you want to be free of him and your fear of him coming for you, this is the best way.”

Nodding, she walked into his arms. It was fast becoming one of her favorite places to be. He smelled like sunshine and ocean and all the things that reminded her of home. If Jen was honest with herself, she’d have to admit that she was more than a little attached to him. Nowhere near the “L” word, but they were heading in the right direction.

“I can’t believe there are so many people out there,” her mom said as she came in from peeking out the windows in the bar.

“You’re not helping, Mom.”

“Oops, sorry, baby. It’ll be okay,” her mom said with a gentle smile.

“Exactly, this will be easy. Just remember the endgame and stick to the script,” Murph added.

Taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly, she checked her hair and makeup in the mirror. She might as well look as good as possible, even with the sky blue pink hair fading and her roots showing. “All right let’s do this,” Jen said.

A half-hour later it was done. The news crews were packing up, but most of them had reported live. It wasn’t often they had the opportunity for a national news story. Since Kurt had put up the reward it had gone viral. She had no doubt he’d done it on purpose, for seventy-five thousand some people would sell their own mother. It had been sheer luck that she hadn’t been spotted until she’d gone to the drugstore.

“So now what happens?” Pam asked. They were hanging out in the kitchen and Tony was making burgers. The bar didn’t open for another forty-five minutes.

Murph’s phone rang before he had a chance to answer and he stepped out to take the call.

Wondering what was going on, Jen answered her mother. “More waiting. Although Tex thinks the temptation will be too great. We hit on all of his triggers. That’s why Murph kept his arm around me. Telling everyone we went on a secret getaway and that I’d already broken up with Kurt was the icing on the cake for a controlling narcissist.”

“I hate that once again you’re bait,” her mom said.

“But they’ve got her six, Dollface. Do you see the way Murph looks at her? Nothing’s going to happen to your baby girl,” Tony said as he plated burgers for an early lunch.

Jen wasn’t sure she could eat, but when Tony slid the plate in front of her and she inhaled, her stomach growled.

They were almost finished eating by the time Murph returned. “I apologize, I didn’t expect it to take so long. The team caught the press conference on TV and said we looked great. Cam said to tell you that Halo was drooling all over the screen when he saw you.”

“Seriously?”

“Yup, he even texted me a pic,” Murph said as he showed them the photo. “Cam wants to know what you did to his dog.”

“I didn’t do anything to Halo. I swear.”

“I know, so does he, none of us have seen him react like he does to you. It’s just surprising.”
